I’ve got a show coming up this week with the handsome fella in this picture with me. Last week we got together and wrote a song that we’re going to sing together at the show! Boston is melting. I slept over at my friend Julie’s Lower East Side apartment in New York last night, on a futon without covers. Here are some covers you don’t want to sleep without:

new york-centric

I don’t know why, but this blog is becoming all about my interactions with New York. I’ve decided I should be blogging more, just before I leave to do a show in New York for a week and a half. Vegan Brunch Review, New York Part 2

I spent the weekend before last in New York. One night I stayed with my friend and old roommate Julie in the Lower East Side and the other night I stayed with Becca and Wahima, two friends from California, in Astoria. As always, eating at delicious vegan-friendly restaurants was top priority. Reviews:

Kate’s Joint

(Brunch – Lower East Side)

Okay, everyone. This was amazing. First of all, for the low price of $11 dollars, you get:

coffee, a morning alcoholic beverage, and a brunch special. I would pay $1100/month just to live in Manhattan and eat there everyday. Well, maybe not. Anyway, I got the vegan banana walnut pancakes, coffee, and a greyhound. The pancakes were great. Three plain-looking pancakes on the outside, but full of banana and nuts when you cut into them. Delicious, filling, and cheap. We didn’t have to wait for a table, our service was great, and I think I was wearing the exact same outfit as our waiter. Good fucking eats. If you can find it (I’ve tried and failed on previous trips to find this place), you will love it.

Sacred Chow

(Brunch – East Village)

This is an old favorite of mine. I like going here because it’s small, it’s cute, and it’s close to Washington Square Park which is easy to find and get to. They didn’t have my favorite pancakes in the world, so I got a vegan waffle and a half pitcher of sangria instead. The sangria was delicious and adorably garnished with pineapple slices. The waffle was delicious, but not as good as my pancakes I’ve had from them before OR the pancakes at Kate’s. Sacred Chow is a little pricey, but the quaintness, location, and sangria make it worth it. Or at least, that’s what I think.

I can’t stop listening to Mirah’s You Think It’s Like This But Really It’s Like This. At first listen, I could go either way, but this album has worked it’s way into my heart. I’m pretty sure if I had any hipster street cred, I’d have loved this earlier. Like 2004 earlier. Better late than never, I can’t get enough. I love every song on this cd, but my favorite tracks include: Sweepstakes Prize, Of Pressure, La Familia, Gone Sugaring. All. So. Sexy. I can’t get over it.

Let’s none of us forget about who we are

The last five days have been the best days of the year, hands down. Maybe even the best days of the last two years. Let’s talk about it:

Recording!

I spent Friday and Saturday recording in South Boston. It was awesome. I put down eight songs, with guitars, vocals, some electric guitar and some cheap keyboard. Hearing the songs on the first playback was so cool, I can’t wait to hear it when the mix is done.

On the second day, Rebecca came in with me to take some photos and video (for posterity – see left) and we ate lunch at Mike’s Diner, which was cheap and delicious. After laying down the last tracks, I hauled my guitar and keyboard Downtown and sunned on the Common.

Also, I’ve got a friend working on album art who does beautiful work. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.

Improv!

On Saturday, we had an amazing Family Show at ImprovBoston. There were a whole bunch of improvised songs and they were all great.

Then yesterday I got some life-changing improv news. I know, that sounds dramatic, but it’s true! More on this when it starts up. I can’t wait to see where else this year will take me.

Life!

The sun is out in Boston. The plastic is off the windows and they’ve been cracked open. This raises my happiness and energy levels dramatically. Also, I’m taking time to be outside and breathe the fresh air. This is incredibly important.

Easter Sunday (coincidentally my half birthday this year) was all about enjoying the weather. I wore shorts, took a long walk, sunned, cut some hair, ate a delicious Easter Dinner with the girls on the porch, and played music. Best Sunday of the year.
